Will Laser Hair Reduction Help Keratosis Pilaris?

Will Laser Hair Reduction Help Keratosis Pilaris?

Laser hair removal services may help mitigate Keratosis Pilaris for some people, but it is worth considering the factors to assess possible efficacy. It is common that KP bumps contain an ingrown hair that gets stuck with the keratin under the surface. Laser hair removal is frequently effective in helping draw out and prevent ingrown hairs so there may be some benefit to addressing keratosis pilaris with laser services. Laser hair removal technology is pretty impressive, but it is important to note that the lasers used can only target hairs with some pigment at the root of the follicle.

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe During Pregnancy And While Breastfeeding?

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe During Pregnancy And While Breastfeeding?

Cosmetic laser treatments are not advised while a person is pregnant, as there is not enough research to determine safety for either the pregnant person or the child. While there are laser-based medical procedures that may be safe during pregnancy, in the absence of research, it is an industry standard from the medical community, the laser providers, and from laser provider’s insurance policy’s to not provide laser hair reduction or other cosmetic laser services for a person known to be pregnant.

The research is quite limited on the impact of laser services while breastfeeding / chestfeeding. However, the consensus from both the medical community and laser providers would be that a person can proceed with cosmetic laser services (i.e. laser hair removal and skin care treatments) while breastfeeding / chestfeeding, but avoiding treatment on or around the areola and breast tissue. Some people choose to be a bit more cautious and opt to postpone laser hair removal in the underarm areas as well, since the armpit is anatomically near milk producing glandular tissue.

PCOS and Management Tips

At this time, there’s no singular test to determine whether someone has PCOS, so once other conditions are ruled out by a doctor, PCOS may be diagnosed if there are multiple indicators that there are high levels of androgens present, irregular menstrual cycles, and/or cysts present on one or both ovaries. Every body is unique, so treatment plans are often most effective when customized with one’s health care team and when regular check-ins are an option to evaluate progress and determine if a different course of treatment is preferred.
