How to Prepare For Your Laser Dark Spot Reduction Treatment 

There are several steps you should take to get the most out of your laser dark spot reduction appointment. A great first step is to avoid sunlight, UV rays, and chemical peels for about 4-6 weeks prior to your appointment. We do not provide laser sessions on freshly tanned skin. Lasering tanned skin could leave you with white spots and dots, also known as hypo-pigmentation, while in many cases could be temporary, but also could be permanent.

Next, you should avoid any topical creams or exfoliants (i.e., Retin A. or Renova) for about two weeks before your treatment. If you use any topical products, make sure to disclose these to one of our dedicated technicians. They will make recommendations regarding whether or not it is safe to continue usage in the weeks leading up to your appointment. If you have a history of peri-oral herpes simplex virus, we may make additional recommendations regarding the prepping phase. Make sure that you connect with your technician prior to a session to determine if there is special protocol for any prescribed medications or topical applications. Never stop taking a prescribed medication without first consulting your doctor.

Aftercare Expectations and Tips  

Now that you have undergone your dark spot reduction treatment, you will want to take care of the treated areas. This treatment will make you feel a slight sunburn-like sensation and overall heat on or near where you underwent treatment. You will also experience darkening or red puffiness around the lesion. Applying an ice pack may help with the sensation along with the puffiness. Puffiness will decrease sooner than the darkening. The pigment of the lesion will darken over 24 hours and over the next few days and then around 5-7 days that lesion will shed through normal body process, revealing healthy tissue and more even skin tone. 

As mentioned, you should stay out of UV rays and sunlight before your treatment, but you should avoid them for about three weeks after your appointment as well. Use wide-brimmed hats, long sleeves, and at least SPF 30 sunscreen daily. 

After 24 hours, you can apply non-fragrance moisturizers. Make sure you connect with your technician about any specific topical treatments to ensure you have the best advice. Avoid heat inducing activities, like saunas and hot tubs, for about 2-3 days post treatment. Give the areas time to heal! Try to not scratch, pick, or touch the area.
